MOMA Painting and Scuplture

The first painting displayed from the MoMA Painting and Sculpture collection was in 1929. The works of Gauguin, Van Gogh, Seurat, and Cezanne were loaned and shown in this exhibition. In 1985, MoMA Painting and Sculpture Department was established. 

With around 3,600 artworks, the department holds the world’s largest collection of sculptures and modern paintings. It is quite inclusive and features works from the 19th century to the present date. From Cezanne’s The Bather to Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, you will find lots of masterpieces here. A look at this MoMA art collection will give you a glimpse into the major movements and artists from the 1890s.

The Joseph and Sylvia Slifka Painting and Sculpture Study Center is the best way to access information on MoMA paintings or sculptures. The study center has files on over 3,400 MoMA paintings and sculptures. You can get photographs, press clippings, label texts, correspondence, press releases, etc. for the artworks. One can access the files in this study center by getting an appointment for Wednesday or Thursday. It is accessible between 11 AM and 5 PM.
